Went to Mack-i-nauuuw

If you ask Noah about his trip to Michigan, you are sure to hear about the highlight of his trip - walking the Mackinac Bridge. Originally, we were not scheduled to go to Michigan this year. With the grandparents in Kansas, we didn't see a reason. However, the more we thought about it, the more we leaned toward it being important for Benjamin to meet the family - and for us to get away. When we started talking about the trip, one of us kept going back to the fact that it was the 50th anniversary of the bridge walk and we really should take the boys up there, after all, there were pictures of someone else up there as a wee-one. And persistence won out again. Saturday we were able to meet (and play with) the kids of the girl who grew up across the street from me. Sophia is 3 and her twin siblings, Ally and Jackson, just turned one. The kids had a great time running around together and it was fun to see all of them in one place. The kids' mom is going through a rough-spell but the children are no worse for wear. They were just adorable. After a nice nap, we headed to the Cascades. Growing up in Jackson, I never understood their purpose. It is a man-made waterfall and in the evenings there is a light show set to music. Well, it just so turns out we have a son who loves water AND music, so I finally have an appreciation for the place. We took him last summer and he had a blast. Unfortunately, it was not windy this year so the fountains didn't get passers-by soaking. One little boy was disappointed by this until daddy showed him how to roll down the big hills. Talk about grass stains... Sunday, after church, we made the trek up north. While no one did any sleeping, it was a nice ride. We did find something to keep big brother quiet. We arrived in time for dinner then hit the sack for our early morning on Monday. The alarm went off at 4:45. Ick. (When it takes you over an hour to get everyone to sleep and then a certain baby keeps waking up because he doesn't want to sleep in his porta-crib, and then plasters himself right next to mom so he can continuously kick her all night while daddy sleeps with Noah because he wakes up every time daddy gets out of bed, 4:45 comes early.) But we were ready to go at 6:00AM. We thought we would make it in time for the walk to start at 7:00 but we did not take in to account that the whole state of Michigan was going to be headed in the same direction. We don't know if it was because of the anniversary but there was a lot of traffic. A lot. It took us quite a while to get to the north side of the bridge to begin the walk to the south. The weather was absolutely perfect and for the first time we did not need sweatshirts. The boys were troopers, though, and sported their new hats. We did not keep track of how long the 5 mile trek took, but it was long enough for two very tired boys to sneak in a nap and for two barges to pass underneath. Luckily, Noah woke up in time to see the big boats. He will tell you about them when you ask about his trip. After buying our souvenir patches in Mackinaw City, we headed to the great-grandparents' house. We had a nice visit. (Pictures to come when the grandparents forward them on to us for some reason we didn't take any with our own camera.) Daddy and Noah got to do some swimming at the hotel then it was time for bed. Bedtime was not as long this time, but Noah did start to pronounce every single word he knows again. Luckily, he was too tired to carry on for too long. He also made sure there was a pillow on his bed for daddy. Benjamin again decided mommy's bed was better than his own, but at least we slept this time. (I know think ALL hotel rooms should come with separate bedrooms.) Tuesday we visited again then headed back to Jackson. Wednesday we did laundry, had a band concert, and got ready for our trip back to Kansas. Until next time, Michigan...
