The Kansas monsoon season let up just enough on Saturday that we were able to get outside to play. Noah made his first (of many to come for this little animal-lover, I am sure) outdoor pet. He and daddy found 'Wormy' slithering through the yard. Noah was very intrigued by him and needed to study him. Daddy would ask if Noah wanted to hold him and he would say, "Okay... NO!" and then run a short distance to scream and scrunch up his face. And yet he would get very upset if dad tried to put 'Wormy' down. Eventually a compromise was reached and 'Wormy' was placed in the sandbox for close observation. I got up to get my camera only to discover that the batteries were DEAD! And we have been digital for so long, there was no option of finding a regular old camera to grab. (Perhaps I'll have to get one to keep around for such emergencies...) I was pretty disappointed by this, but it was even worse when Noah finally decided he was big enough to touch the worm. He picked him up and turned to me with the biggest smile on his face... and I have only my mind to count on to remember it. Maybe someday I will draw you a picture of what it looked like.
We also do not have any pictures to document Benjamin's first picnic. One of the area towns is celebrating its Centennial and they have all kinds of activities planned for the week. Saturday they were having a hot air balloon launch at a local park. We packed a dinner and headed out for the evening with Grandpa and Grandma Campbell. We arrived at the park to discover they had canceled the event 'due to weather'. Apparently it was too windy for the balloons. But, lucky for us, it was a perfect evening for a picnic. We found ourselves next to another family with 4 or 5 children about the age of 5. They were trying to play with bubbles and Noah was infatuated with them. They'd chase after the bubbles and he'd chase after them just giggling and giggling. He'd come back on occasion to get a cookie from Grandma. And Benjamin just laid on the blanket the whole time taking in all the sights. He is quite a big boy now and spends the majority of his time on his tummy. He has learned that is how best to see the world - and keep track of big brother. Grandma did have a camera so, hopefully, when she gets her film developed, we will be able to put something up. And we are going to buy back up batteries to keep on hand...

I can't tell you how many times I've picked up the camera... to dead batteries. We now keep rechargeables around just for that reason.
