Twas the Night Before Christmas

We started our day just after lunch when we delivered our cookies to the neighborhood firefighters
and police station.
Can I just say how little your kids look when they are sitting in a fire truck? I wonder if moms of 40-yr-olds feel the same way. Also, you should know that police stations are not actually manned on the weekend. We thought we were going to have better luck because we were doing it during the day as opposed to the evening like we normally do. Nope. They have this little box phone that you call to dispatch on. When Christopher told them why were there the dispatcher thought that was so cute, she had an officer come back to the station to meet us. I should also add that I was not going to do this this year. The actual cookie baking usually becomes such a chore that I don't enjoy it. However, both boys asked on several occasions when we would be going to see the firemen, so we picked our simplest recipes and enjoyed the whole process.

Next up? Church. The boys sang for the Christmas Eve services at 3:00 and 5:00.
They had 120 kids. Wow! We all went to the 3:00 service and then left when the Noah was done at 5:00. But wait, didn't I just say both boys sang two services? Well, that was the plan. Unfortunately, nobody checked with Benjamin to make sure this fit into his schedule. He got up there to sing the second time but kept dozing off in his chair as mama carried him off and he slept in her arms in the choir room until Noah was done singing. We picked up some dinner and headed to Grandpa and Grandma's to eat. Grandpa had a bad cold so he didn't go to church with us.

Had to say goodbye to our pal "Sunshine". Yes, he is in the fridge. We figured maybe this was his way of preparing to head back to the frigid North Pole??? (Mommy and Daddy also requested that he spend the off season with the Benson's "Rocky" because Sunshine need to step it up in the coolness of revealing himself category. (Part One. and Part Two.)
Time for "The Night Before Christmas".
Everybody picked out the cookie they Santa would like best.

While visions of sugar plums danced in their hands, Santa got to work in delivering his presents. Ironically, while he worked, he kept an eye on the NORAD video of where in world he was currently working. We've never done this. Have you? It was pretty fun! We have a couple of questions about his flight patterns because we didn't think going from Rio de Janeiro to Greenland and back to Sao Paulo was really the best use of his time. But, I guess he has been doing this a lot longer than I have been paying attention, so I should give him the benefit of the doubt.
Because daddy was such a stickler in starting our wrapping earlier in the week, we were done in record time this year. 10:15 and we were tucking ourselves in to bed. Maybe that wasn't such a bad plan - it sure beats trying to enjoy Christmas when you didn't go to bed until 2:00am. Can't wait until the morning!

I also want to share my friend Whitney's site. I think this is the cutest idea ever and I cannot imagine how excited kids would be to actually see Santa in their own house. I thought it was just a photoshop trick but her husband actually dressed up. Love it. And yes, they are the same Bensons with the cool elf. They just know how to put the magic in Christmas. :)

Benjamin's First Sleepover

We have no pictures because it didn't happen here, BUT Benjamin had his first sleepover tonight at his good friend Eric's house. As we were pulling in to their neighborhood he started requesting if his big brother couldn't go with him but it didn't take much convincing that he could do it. He walked in to the house saying, "Here comes Mr. Sleepover!" From all reports, it went very well. So glad to have such special friends that we can share these big moments with! Thanks for a fun night, Eric!

Happy Birthday, Bumbarita!

Our littlest son turned 5 today. Oh, how does this happen? Isn't this the same boy that looked like this just yesterday?
I have tried convincing him pretty much all year that he should stay 4, but he would have nothing to do with it. There are so many things about him that remain the same. He has the biggest smile AND the biggest cry. This kid can start (and stop) crocodile tears faster than anyone I have ever seen.He still loves to eat and will try anything that we offer him. (And can I just mention how nice it is to have ONE child who comes to the table happily each evening and doesn't think that I am trying to kill him every time I cook something that is not hot dogs?)
He still LOVES to read. He quite often falls asleep with a pile of books on his bed and one cracked across his chest. He still makes a fashion statement each and every day.
(And I am pleased to announce that he has finally outgrown his 2T pants - well, in length anyway.)
He still doesn't stop talking long enough for even a picture. He still loves his sister. He still loves horse-ing around with his brother.

And he still fits perfectly in his mama's snuggles. (Although, I would be willing to part with his middle of the night visits...)

In fact, that is why I have tried to convince him that he needs to stop growing. I don't want to see the day when he doesn't fit perfectly on my lap and I can carry him wherever he wants to go. But, that day is coming. And since we can't stop it, we are going to do our best to enjoy every day along the way.
Happy birthday, Benjamin! We love you!

He Built a Bear

Noah has had his mind set on going to Build-A-Bear for quite some time. He earned some money helping clean the house yesterday, so we decided today was the day. He and I headed over after lunch. He knew right what he wanted and got to work.
Of course his bear needed a heart so he rubbed it to warm it up, kissed it, and made a wish on it
before inserting it deep in the bear's tummy.
He also knew exactly what his bear was going to wear - a Chiefs outfit.
He then filled out the bear's adoption papers - all alone. (It's sad when your little boy can read it all himself. I really was just a chauffeur today...)
The little guy got all loaded up in his safe traveling cage to make his way home.
And this little boy could not be happier with his new buddy. Falcon.
He has also asked to have his next birthday there. I am pretty certain he will change his mind on that between now and March, but just in case he doesn't, you heard it here first.

Santa

Santa arrived at our local mall on 11/10. They had a big celebration planned so we headed over after Noah got out of school. We were a little early to ensure we had front row seats. A group of carolers entertained us while we waited. Benjamin thought it was too chilly to stand and watch so he camped out on the ground. So, Santa actually arrived by helicopter. It was pretty exciting. I took a video of it. Unfortunately, one of my sweet children unknowingly deleted it. Oops.

Once the big guy was on the ground, he invited everyone to follow him inside for some fun. We headed straight for the face-painting line.

There were a lot of people there and my kids were losing patience so we opted to not do anything else that day.

Yesterday they were finally able to go and see Santa. Noah was all about writing a letter as soon as he woke up.
(Grandma - click once on the picture/letter and it will open up so you can actually read it.) Be sure to read the last line in his gift request list. Little type-o made it a classic. And because Noah was doing it, Benjamin wanted to also.

He took his in the car while we were grocery shopping. He was asking me how to spell all the words, so when he got to the gift list, I suggested he just draw the pictures instead. He made a drum set, a xylophone, a keyboard, and a teddy bear.

We had our annual outing with our friends, the Potts Family. We went first to see the Muppet movie. (Super cute, if you are interested...) Then to the mall. How about that Abby? She is getting closer! And she didn't even require her daddy to hold her. She actually went right up to tell Santa hello but when he asked her to sit on his knee she said no way. She just wanted to stand with her Noah. Awww... They remembered to tell Santa everything. (Abby told him a horse, a pony, and a unicorn, by the way.) And seemed pleased with themselves. Until we got in the car. Then Abby started crying because she couldn't find her toys. The boys did their best to explain that Santa doesn't give you the presents right away, you have to wait until Christmas. Or Christmas Eve as Noah argued. I'm not sure she ever accepted that but she did eventually stop crying. Now we just wait to see if Santa can remember what everybody said. Good luck, Santa!

They Craft

It has been a long time in the making but it would appear that my kids - all 3 - are finally interested in crafting! Abby and Benjamin have always been happy with a stack of paper some markers and glue, but this is more intentional.
I picked these little scarecrows and turkeys out at Michaels. They were 33 cents or something. I thought they might buy a little time while I was trying to prepare a meal or something. The kids were so excited about them! Abby and Benjamin did theirs during the day while Noah was at school. He came home and noticed them right away. I asked if he wanted to do one and he went running right to the table.

I found these Christmas ones in the $1 section at Target.
As soon as I mentioned that I had them, they all wanted them. While Noah was coloring his Santa he was asking me what I thought they might have to make for St. Patrick's Day because he just cannot wait to see. Oh how I hope the crafting companies do not fail my boy on this one!

And, yes, I do realize that I could easily put this stuff together myself. But if having it all pre-cut and giving him a picture to replicate is what it takes, then I will gladly give my $1 (or $3) to the cause.

Thankful

We decided to be a little more intentional about acknowledging all that we have to be thankful for. I picked up some pre-cut leaves and every night at dinner we would each list something we were thankful for.
Everyone had a good time with this.
We had a wide range of items from family and friends to Rio Angry Birds and the Atlanta Falcons. One of my favorites can be seen here: God, Jesus, and footdall.
I punched each one with a hole punch and ran a piece of yarn through it. Now they are hanging as a garland on our tree. Each year I hope to add to it.
