Extra Curriculars

Now on to some of the things we did to keep ourselves busy. (It's probably going to take more than one post...) Every night, Fort Wilderness has a campfire AND sing-a-long. Somehow, we struggled to get there on time regardless of how long we gave ourselves for dinner each night. We did manage to catch some of the singing and the boys got a chance to show off all their Disney song knowledge. (Oh, and maybe their mom did, too...) I think I even heard daddy singing on a song or two, so don't believe him saying anything to the contrary.
This was the best way to keep Abby out of the little rocks that she kept trying to eat. Her big brothers loved running through the rocks, and throwing the rocks, and kicking the rocks, and even Benjamin had to had them removed from his mouth more than once. (Probably where Abby got the idea.)And, of course, the highlight of each campfire...One night we got to do the Hokey Pokey. While I have sung this with the boys for years, I do believe this was their first time to actually try it out. (Unless they have done it at school.) They thought it was really funny - especially when it got really fast. And we roasted marshmallows for our s'mores. Now, before we went on the trip, this could have been the most talked about activity. And just look at their faces. Did this activity reward, or what? Truth is, they hated it. They didn't like having to stand still to hold the stick. Benjamin probably didn't like the smoke. Noah burned his marshmallows right off and that was very upsetting. Once we got them off the sticks, neither of them wanted hot marshmallows in their s'mores. Benjamin would eat them right out of the bag. Noah wanted "just a plain s'more" which turned out to be just the chocolate bar. But the rest of us enjoyed them. Even though we had to roast them ourselves.
We spent lots of time on the swings and pay areas. I think all the resorts have several areas set up. They seemed to be everywhere we looked. Which was fine with all of us, I think.FISHING! The second most-talked about activity pre-travel. We thought we would go fishing a lot and figured it would be cheaper to take our own poles rather than rent one every time we wanted to go fishing. Boy, were we wrong. It probably was cheaper. But we certainly didn't go very often. Nor did we go for very long. The boys made it about two casts each and then they were off doing other things. (Can't blame them really, we didn't get any bites and that isn't fun for anyone let alone novice fishermen who have been spoiled by the farmer.)This was more along the boys' line... Running Grandpa ragged while mom and dad continued fishing. They did lots of running, screaming, and throwing pine cones and sticks in the water. (Any wonder why we didn't catch anything?)Oh, and they also had plenty of time for cheese cracker breaks, thanks to Grandma Bonnie.
