HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I am of the mind that New Year's should be celebrated. I am also a big fan of traditions. I am NOT a fan of waiting until the 30th and saying, "So, do we want to do something tomorrow?" Despite my best efforts, we still struggle in this category. The fact that 3/5 of our family should not be up past 9:00PM is not helping the situation, truth be told. But, I still try. I also have this thing about wanting to spend the night with my children even though they do not really understand what is going on. And after a few reminders that they will be up at the same time the next morning NO MATTER WHAT, I was convinced they should be in bed on time. So, this year we had Christopher's parents over for dinner and games. (In future years, I'd like to make it a formal occasion but for this year, I was happy with jeans.) We had stuffed flank steaks (thank you, Costco), homemade bread, garlic potatoes and green beans, and salad. For dessert it was the world's best no-bake peanut butter pie, and Italian sodas. After we got the kiddos to bed we hit the floor for a wild game of Mexican Train. It was very fun, even though I could not convince anyone that the highest score should win. We even managed to stay up until midnight CENTRAL time, which we have not done in I don't know how long. We did have trouble finding Dick Clark. Anyone else have that problem? And what was with the music on Carson Daly's show? I was thankful my kids were not there to see it. Anyhoo... it was a wonderful evening and a great way to start a new year.

I LOVE Mexican Train. Another reason I need to move to OP.

We watched the ball drop on Fox News, of all places b/c we couldn't find a 9 PM PST version anywhere else.

When Sarah was just 4, we decided to let her stay up until midnight. She made it to 11 PM when she begged to go to bed. She looked so relieved when we put her down! :-)

Our libraries do a countdown to the New Year at noon -- that's probably what we'll start next year. Of course, we can always do the Eastern Time Zone New Year and be in bed just after 9 PM! :-)
